As I write this on the return flight to the States, taking back with me a pair of dirty jeans, some new calices, and a couple of poorly taken photographs, I ask myself why do I miss it already? Despite many of my fears and concerns about this trip having come true, my journey to El Salvador with Dr. Lee and others had somehow been one of the most memorable, eye-opening, and happy experiences of my life.

As I had feared, the trip took a toll on the body; late night, early mornings, and long, grueling hours under the sun. I can still vividly remember the sound of metal grating against hardening concrete with each shovelful and the stretch of the old-fashioned bathroom, which, even after several visits, I never quite got used to. Why in the world did I enjoy this trip so much?

Perhaps this trip had been so memorable, not in spite of my fears coming true, but rather because they did. The experience pushed me out of my comfort zone, challenging me to work like never before and reflect upon myself as a friend, a son, as me. Each day, I was driven to find and push my own limits, both physically and mentally. Through this, I was able to learn much about myself and take one more step in the lifelong process of personal growth.

Although I cannot say that I have truly became a more mature or empathetic person in only 8 days, perhaps this trip will remind me to say thank you just a few more time, and that’s at least a start. Also, this trip would not have been the same without the people. Watching everyone push themselves to their limit and listening to the stories they had to share truly inspired me to never give up and better myself as a human being. Every single teammate, regardless of age or background, had something to teach and wisdom to share. And every precious memory together, every small moment of laughter and happiness, would not have been possible without them.

So as I sit in my plane seat, reminiscing about all the pain, sweat, and laughter of the past few days, trying to figure out just why I loved it all, I cannot help but look forward to the next trip with Dr. Lee and the company.
