Matt: I’m from a family of ten. We’re scattered everywhere but we all try to make it home for Thanksgiving. 식구가 열 명이에요. 미국 전역에 흩어져 살지만 추수감사절에는 다들 집으로 모이려고 애쓰죠.
Chloe: Ten! Your poor mother. Must have been wild growing up! 열 명이나요! 어머님이 불쌍해요. 자라면서 꽤 다사다난했겠어요.
Matt: Yeah, it was like a circus every day! 그럼요, 매일이 서커스 같았죠!

가족 이야기를 할 때 영어에서는“I have ten siblings.” 보다 “I’m from a family of ten.”이 훨씬 자연스럽게 들려요. 한국 사람들이 많이 실수하는 표현이“My family has four people.”인데, 이것은 문법적으로는 맞지만, 뭔가 어색한 표현이 됩니다.“There are four in my family.”라고 말하는 게 더 원어민같은 표현입니다. 가족을 말할 때, 숫자보다 마음이 먼저 전해집니다.
