Many students in the United States eat school lunches, thinking that they’ll be receiving the proper nutrition for their learning experience. However, foods in most schools aren’t very healthy.
Studies have shown that kids aren’t getting enough healthy foods in school which can lead to child obesity and low attention spans. Schools give students these unhealthy fast foods because they are very cheap. Surveys say that kids aren’t eating enough vegetables and fruits and instead are eating foods like pizza and other unhealthy foods.
This is also a problem because foods like pizza have high amounts of fat in it. This high amount leads kids to have obesity in early stages of their lives. Obesity is a very stressful thing to deal with mentally and physically, which distract students from their learning. Students shouldn’t have to be worried about obesity when they need to be worried about school. These unhealthy foods have high amounts of fat and low amount of healthy nutritional benefits. This will lead to kids not able to pay attention during class, since the brain will have a hard time receiving information and focusing during class.
Studies have shown that students who eat cafeteria lunches have a hard time focusing because the brain isn’t getting enough energy. The fat and sugar gives students a temporary boost of focus and brain power but it will crash. Therefore, school cafeterias need to put more fruits and vegetables in the school lunch. However, these unhealthy foods are very common in the school cafeterias because junk foods are cheap and easy to buy since it is everywhere.
Statistics show that schools will lose 15% revenue to replace junk foods with healthy food, but as explained, schools need to put more healthy food in the cafeteria even though they will lose some revenue, since school is a place where students go to learn and be safe.
