갈 길을 잘 인도해주는 말 중에 ‘매스터 마인드(master minder)’란 말이 있다. 우리는 입학이나 취업이나 결혼이나 인생의 중요한 일이 있을 때마다 크고 작은 결단을 해야 한다. 요한이 메시야인가 아닌가 의심하는 사람들도 있었고, 도대체 요한은 왜 나타났을까? 라고 하면서 사람들은 호기심을 가지면서 접근했다. 마음속에 사탄의 끼가 있었다면 그는 어떤 행동을 했을까? 자기의 이득을 위해서 수단방법을 가리지 않는 사람들을 생각할 때 더욱 더 심도 있는 마음 속 질문이다.
요한은 유대인들에게 자신을 묻자, 자기는 메시야가 아니고 메시야가 오심을 준비하러 왔다고 명쾌하게 자기 입장을 밝혔다. 그는 겸허했다(He was humble). 그는 오실 예수의 신들메도 풀기 어려운 사람(the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose)이라고 예수를 세우고 자기를 낮추었다. 그러면서 그는 새로 오실 메시야가 성령과 불로 세례를 줄 것이라고 시원스럽게 대답했다(He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire). 자기는 물로 세례를 주지만 새로 오실 주님은 성령과 불로 세례를 주실 거라고 하면서 새로 오실 메시야를 차분하게 영적 분위기 속에서 응답했던 것이다. 주님께서 열매 맺지 않는 무화과나무(every tree
which bringeth not good fruit)를 버린다고(is hewn down)하셨다. 매사에 우리가 주님을 개입시키면(substitude) 주님의 말씀이 우리라는 도구(tool)속에서 성취되리라.
“And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.”[Luke3:15-17]
“15.백성들이 바라고 기다리므로 모든 사람들이 요한을 혹 그리스도신가 심중에 의논하니 16.요한이 모든 사람에게 대답하여 가로되 나는 물로 너희에게 세례를 주거니와 나보다 능력이 많으신 이가 오시나니 나는 그 신들메를 풀기도 감당치 못하겠노라 그는 성령과 불로 너희에게 세례를 주실 것이요 17.손에 키를 들고 자기의 타작마당을 정하게 하사 알곡은 모아 곡간에 들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우시리라.”[누가복음 3:15-17]
