고전주의 경제학파의 주장에 의하면 “필요는 가치의 척도(Necessity is the measure of value)”라 했다. 필요성이 많으면 가치가 많다는 이야기가 된다. 주님께서 진짜로 가치 있는 인간을 찾으려면 누구를 찾을 것인가? 회개를 한다고 입버릇처럼 떠들면서 이권만 나오면 남이야 죽던 말든 부당한 이득을 취하는 사람들일까? 주님께 조금만 죄를 져도 마음을 아파하면서 땅을 치며 회개하는 자들일까? 이것들은 양심의 법칙에 의해서 누구든지 알 수 있는 문제이리라. 군병(the soldiers)들이 물었다. “어찌해야 되느냐?(What shall we do?)”고 물으니 “포악하게 굴지말고(violence to no man), 무소하지 말고(Do not accuse) 받는 급료로 만족하라(Be content with your wage)”라고만 했다.
“우유를 먹는 자보다 우유를 배달해 주는 자가 더 건강하다(Be in good health)”란 말이 있다. 우리가 소유한 것을 나눠 쓰고 시간과 재능과 물질을 쪼개서 같이 쓰는 지혜가 필요할 뿐이다. 율법보다 사랑으로 접근해 보자. 사랑은 치료와 성장의 원동력이다.
And the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?” He answereth and saith unto them, “He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.” Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto
him, “Master, what shall we do?” And he said unto them, “Exalt to more than that which is appointed you.” And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, and “what shall we do?” And he said unto them, “Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.”[Luke 3:9-13]
