The Los Angeles Philharmonic and globally beloved pianist Cho Seong-jin are returning to LA. Following two performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall in February, Cho will take the stage on August 5 (Tuesday) at the world-renowned outdoor venue, the Hollywood Bowl, to perform with the LA Philharmonic, one of America’s premier orchestras, under the baton of Music and Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel.

Currently immersed in the works of French composer Maurice Ravel, Cho will perform two of Ravel’s piano concertos at this Hollywood Bowl concert, which is specially supported by the Korea Daily’s U.S. headquarters, the official media sponsor of the LA Philharmonic. Conducted by Dudamel, the performance is set to captivate audiences under the stars.

The concert, starting at 8 p.m. on August 5, will showcase a stunning blend of French Romanticism and Harlem jazz. The LA Philharmonic, led by Dudamel, will open with Duke Ellington’s Harlem, followed by Cho performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand and Piano Concerto in G Major. The evening will conclude with Ellington’s Black, Brown, and Beige as a grand finale.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth (1875–1937), known for works like Boléro and Rapsodie espagnole. To commemorate this milestone, Cho released an album of Ravel’s complete solo piano works with Deutsche Grammophon and a recording of Ravel’s piano concertos with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (conducted by Andris Nelsons). As part of his global Ravel performance tour, Cho follows his earlier LA Disney Hall appearance with this Hollywood Bowl performance, once again joining forces with Maestro Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic.

Born in Seoul in 1994, Cho began playing the piano at age six and gave his first public recital at 11. In 2009, he became the youngest winner of the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan. At 17, he took third place at the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 2011. From 2012 to 2015, he studied under pianist Michel Béroff at the Paris Conservatoire. In 2015, he became the first Korean to win the International Chopin Piano Competition in Poland, cementing his status as a world-class pianist.

Since signing an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 2016, Cho has performed with leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, New York Philharmonic, and Philadelphia Orchestra. As one of the most sought-after pianists today, he receives invitations from around the world. Currently based in Berlin, Cho serves as an artist-in-residence with the Berlin Philharmonic.Cho Seong-jin Hollywood Bowl Concert■ Ravel’s Two Piano Concertos August 5 (Tuesday), 8 p.m.
