The California Highway Patrol (CHP) will conduct a focused DUI (Driving Under the Influence) crackdown on major roads during the year-end and New Year holidays.
The CHP announced that from 6:00 PM on December 31 to 11:59 PM on January 1, it will observe a "Maximum Enforcement Period," deploying all available patrol personnel to intensify enforcement against DUI, speeding, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations.
Last year, during the 78-hour year-end Maximum Enforcement Period, 892 individuals were arrested for suspected DUI, according to the CHP. During the recent Christmas holiday enforcement period, which lasted 30 hours, five people lost their lives in traffic accidents within the CHP's jurisdiction.
