PGA and LIV Merge: The Bigger Picture

LIV Golf has created a big change within the golf industry starting in early 2021. Taking many renowned golfers such as; Phil Mickelson, Bryson Dechambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Cameron Smith, the transition sparked a massive debate about the creation of a new professional tour. The golf world was split between the LIV supporters and the PGA supporters. Even going as far as a lawsuit, both tours were at odds with each other until the decision that all the tours (DP world, PGA, and LIV) were going to merge.

First and foremost, all parties involved have agreed to drop their respective lawsuits, paving the way for the merger of the companies.. As a result, a new company will be created with majority of the ownership going to PGA. According to GlobalNews,”The new company, however, will operate for profit and Saudi Arabia’s PIF will take a large minority stake in the combined entity. The exact stake will depend on how much it will invest - an amount expected to be in the billions.

But how does sportswashing play into this whole event? Sportswashing, as defined by Greenpeace.org, refers to, “the act of sponsoring a sports team or event in order to distract from bad practices elsewhere.” Saudi Arabia, which was involved in discussions surrounding environmental and human violations during LIV’s creation, has a significant history related to these issues. “As Saudi Arabia looks to diversify beyond oil, or at least to “wash” its image free of the taint of fossil fuels and meager human rights, the kingdom has been amping up its investment in sports. While its special focus has been soccer, other sports are on its radar.” as reported by Quartz. Evidently, the notion of merging all these companies, which also will receive funding from Saudi Arabia, points to possible sportswashing.

Moreover, it is essential to consider the opinions of the players involved. Rory Mcliroy emphasizes the need for accountability stating, “There still has to be consequences to actions. The people that left the PGA Tour have irreparably harmed this Tour, and started litigation against it.” On the other hand, “Phil Mickelson rejoices at the news, exclaiming, “Great news from LIV Golf. A big, beautiful, and glamorous deal for the wonderful world of golf. Congrats to all!!!” These contrasting views have yet again arose, but one thing remains clear: change is inevitable. All that is left to do is wait and see the events that will unfold for the golf industry.
