North Korea Launches Two Missiles Toward The Eastern Sea

The issues arising with North Korea cease to end as two missiles were launched around 217 miles off the coast. North and South Korea have long been known to have disputes with each other, especially because the Korean War was simply paused and never resolved.

Since then, there have been many issues with North Korea launching missiles. In fact, they have already launched over 40 ballistic and cruise missiles this year.

It is suspected that these two recent ones were launched from coastal city Munchon, and landed between the waters of South Korea and Japan. The second one, however, flew directly above Japan and terrified many citizens who had to take shelter. North Korea’s tactics continue to remain a mystery as it is unclear whether they launched the missiles via sea. In addition, the U.S., South Korea, and Japan are continuing to take extensive safety measures as North Korea’s intentions remain ambiguous.

This is a disappointing decision since it demonstrates the country’s reluctance to confide in other nations and live in peace. Scarlett Chang, a sophomore at Sunny Hills High School, believes that it “was an unnecessary provocation” and “damaged what trust North Korea had between countries.”

The other countries must now be more vigilant to combat this unpredictable behavior. It causes doubt and uncertainty, especially because the actions are a “clear violation of the UNSC resolution,” according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

It is unfortunate to those who advocated for the reunification of the two Koreas, since this situation only deepened the distrust. Neighboring countries should not have to suffer the consequences of North Korea’s unreasonable testing. Moreso, they should only sign agreements if they will fulfill the purpose: to maintain peace.

By doing the opposite, they solely cause more distrust and damaged bonds. They should realize that this will only lead to more isolation and damage in forming international relations which could prove vital in the future. Josephine Lee, a 6th grader from Chadwick International School, also says that “they are wasting resources.” This is a valid point because they could be putting these materials, like U-235, to beneficial use, like fueling nuclear power plants or nuclear reactors in naval ships. They instead utilize it for their own satisfaction without taking into consideration the other countries’ concerns.

Even their disengagement from the nuclear weapons would provide far more comfort. Overall, North Korea’s recent missiles have caused shock, vexation, and unease as their future plans become unclear.
