The flamboyant fashion trends of the 90’s are difficult to forget. Despite the garish colors and disproportionate cuts, 90’s fashion has officially come back and has thrilled a whole new generation.
Inspired by iconic 90’s movies such as Clueless and 10 Things I Hate About You, many trends have been revived and are taking Generation Z by storm.
The 2010s were all about skinny jeans, whether they had rips or funky stitching. However, baggy and flared jeans are the new skinny jeans. The 1990s hip-hop street style is making a comeback.
Baggy jeans pair well with a baby tee or vintage flannel, and can simply be held up with a shoelace as a belt. On the flip side, low-rise flared jeans as seen on 90’s fashion icons such as Britney Spears and Keira Knightly, are typically paired with a form-fitting cami top or a longer tee that barely goes above the waistline of the jeans. Popularized by online sites like Pinterest, these trends are leading many teens to thrift 90’s jeans.
Chunky black combat boots, most notably Doc Martens, have seemingly been the fashion staple of youth every decade since the 1960s.
With no exception, they make a return in the spotlight in 2021. If you’re looking to add some personality to your style, the low-cut 1461 Doc Martens could be styled with quirky socks with any pattern or even simple white socks with ruffles.
Because Doc Martens can be heavy for the summer, a great alternative is chunky black sandals or flip-flops as seen on Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You. Whether platform, low-top, or lace-up, Doc Martens are a staple shoe in any teen’s closet that adds grunge to your style.
Slip dresses and skirts will be reaching their climax this summer, heavily popularized by Pinterest and online trends. With their large variety of different colors and patterns, slip dresses and skirts make room for unique expression in style. Slip dresses are seemingly the epitome of a minimalist dressing up, as seen on 90’s fashion icons such as Naomi Campbell and the unforgettable Cher from Clueless.
A great breezy and trendy cover-up when wearing a slip dress is a button-up blouse. Whether worn open or tied to the front, a white blouse is a classy way to cover up on Summer nights.
Although it has been 30 whole years since the 90’s, the passing time has not stopped these iconic looks from resurfacing.
Although we are stuck inside due to the pandemic, the return of 90’s fashion trends is too good to pass up and is in fact, a great excuse to put together a fun outfit and spice up a visit to the grocery store.
