Golden Globes a platform for political jabs

In the 2018 Golden Globes, an opening monologue was given by Seth Meyers, an American comedian, political commentator, and television host. Being a comedian, Seth’s monologue was saturated with jokes, picking fun and taking many shots, which included not just people, but other ideas as well, such as racism and sexual misconduct. Out of the several people that Meyers took a shot at, president Trump happened to be one of those people.

Right before making a remark on Harvey Weinstein, another central part of Seth’s speech, Meyers gave a quick thank-you to the Hollywood Foreign Press, before making a droll statement on how the president would be riled up upon hearing anything with a name like “Hollywood Foreign Press,” which were, as he said, “A string of three words that could not have been better designed to infuriate our president.”

He then proceeded to follow up the last comment, noting how “The only name that could make him angrier would be the Hillary Mexico Salad Association.”

For more context, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a non-profit journalism/photography organization. Their primary purpose is to relay activities and interests in the United States’ entertainment industry to other organizations, most of which lie outside of the US. This is done in order to implement a more organized method of moving along cinema news to areas outside of the US. The HFPA also conducts the Golden Globes Awards ceremony each year, which is what Meyers is owing his thanks to.

His jabs at the president were not limited to the opening monologue, as he took another opportunity when Meher Tatna, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was introduced. Meyers then took that as his cue to compliment Tatna, saying she “The president who actually is a stable genius.” This quip was most probably referencing a string of tweets from president Trump, who was responding to a long standing stream of accusations that he was by no means mentally fit to lead the US, saying that he would qualify “as not smart, but genius....and a very stable genius at that!”
