“Study drugs”becoming more prominent
A prescription drug for treating ADHD and narcolepsy, Adderall activates the sympathetic nervous system, catalyzing the flight or fight response. Increasing focus and stimulating metabolism, the drug has earned a reputation as a study drug, increasingly used among young adults aged 18-25. In fact, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), college students are twice as likely to possess Adderall non-medically than non-students.

When stressed by the late night hours of studying for a test the next day, it’s no wonder that students find it easier to take a drug that supposedly eases the burden. However, the truth is not so clear-cut. Although Ritalin, another supposed study drug, and Adderall give a temporary and minimal boost to study sessions, the long term benefits aren’t as pleasant; in fact, there might be no added bonuses at all. Users are not only prone to crashes and depression but susceptible to hallucinations and delusional thinking. The list of side-effects doesn’t just end there either; adderall can also lead heart attacks, strokes, and death. Adderall may provide a minimal boost, but it comes with very real side-effects and very real dangers.

But even without the medical warnings, a study drug is still detrimental in more ways than one. Relying on a substance for enhanced performance limits individual growth as the challenge becomes easier. For a student who has worked arduously for more than a decade’s worth of education, wouldn’t it mean more to continue that work ethic? When taking these drugs, students aren’t just becoming dependent on the medication but are also setting aside their own abilities, as a stimulant capsule takes the front wheel in both school and life after. For anyone considering taking Adderall or any other study drug: for those few easier nights, is it worth it to limit educational opportunity?Of course, Adderall is a drug that can assist those who need it. For those with ADHD or narcolepsy, it can help them realize a more normal life. But for those who use it illegally for last-minute cramming, weight loss, or recreational purposes compromise healthier and more fulfilled lives. This is a drug meant to help, let’s keep it that way.
