The highly acclaimed mathematician Freeman Dyson once stated, “Technology is a gift of God. After the gift of life it is perhaps the greatest of God’s gifts. It is the mother of civilizations, of arts and of sciences.” Today, we live in such an advanced society that everything correlates with one word: speed. In short, the many goals once perceived as impossible have now been achieved and will be sooner than later.
One of the greatest prerequisites that technology offers is social media. Through social media, the virtual world has become a place where people around the world can meet together regardless of space and time. Social media can be perceived in many distinct forms such as blogs, social gaming, social bookmarking, video sharing, photo-sharing, and business networks, to name a few. Many debate that while social media is utilized for entertainment and pure fun, other detrimental effects play crucial roles as well.
These harmful effects affect everyone regardless of age, but they specifically target the youth. While this “virtual world” brings people together, it also isolates and alienates most people.
