Common Core가 강조하는 Questioning Techniques(질문하는 법)은 교사들의 발문법뿐만 아니라, 학생들이 배운 내용에 기반을 두어 질문을 스몰그룹을 만들어 학생들이 직접 만들어내야 합니다(Students formulate their own questions). 학생들의 지적 호기심(curiosity)에서 우러난 질문입니다.

높은 사고력을 개발하기 위한 질문의 예를 적어봅니다.


① What conclusions might you draw? (어떤 결론을 짓겠는가?)

② What thoughts do you have to explain this situation? (이 입장을 설명하기 위해 무슨 생각을 합니까?)

③ Why do you think Robert Frost repeated the last line of this verse, ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’에서 마지막 ‘I have miles to go before I sleep. I have miles to go before I sleep’(Robert Frost 시인이 그의 시 ‘Stopping by Woods on. Snowy Evening’에서 마지막 줄 ‘I have miles to go before I sleep. I have miles to go before I sleep)을 왜 두 번 반복했을까요?"

④ What are some characteristics of Van Gogh’s work that makes you think this painting is his? (반 고흐 미술작품의 특성가운데 몇 개가 이 작품이 그 화가의 것이라고 생각합니까?)

⑤ What would be a fair solution to this problem? (이 문제의 공평한 해결책은 무엇일까요?)

⑥ What people, ideas, and events shaped the development of American Independence?(미국 역사에 어떤 인물들, 아이디어,이벤트가 미국 독립으로 발전하게 되었습니까?)


제가 최근 읽은 책인 ‘Make Just One Change: Teach Students to Ask Their Own Questions’ (by Dr. Dan Rothstein)에서는 교사만 질문을 학생에게 할 것이 아니고 학생들이 직접 질문하도록 하라고 합니다.

‘I learned that when you ask your own questions you can actually learn more.’ (자신의 질문을 할 때 더 많이 배운다)라고 이 책에서는 말합니다.

질문을 만들고(produce your own questions), 질문을 더 잘 만들도록 하고(improve your questions), 질문을 우선순위에 두라(prioritize your questions)고 이 책에 적혀 있습니다.

학생의 마음속에 생각하고 있는 것을 존중하고 dialogue(대화), inquiry(질문)을 통한 teaching and learning(학습)으로 바꿔야 합니다.
