I like to call myself a marathoner. Simply put, I take part in 26.2 mile races several times a year. There is a sense of pride that comes with being acknowledged as a marathoner. I mean, who in their right mind would wake up at the crack of dawn and embrace the harsh cold winds that seem to choke every last breath in you. Well, I for one definitely would.

You see, there is something about marathon running that makes the experience special. Everyone has a story, a unique passion that drives him or her. According to the 2012 Census, less than one percent of the United States population has such a story. For instance, on Feb 2, 2014, the day of the Surf City USA Marathon, I met individuals who ran in order to help them obtain a fresh start in their lives while others were simply checking off their bucket list items. Marathon running is one of the few sports that are exclusive to a small population yet appeal to a general public. Anyone can be a marathoner, regardless of age. The oldest marathoner of my running club who is now currently 81 years old began running at 67 years of age.

So the question arises, “How can I start?” Start small and start with a passion. Running a marathon is a long-term investment that requires patience and endurance. Do not worry if you have neither. That is why we train. Experienced marathoners also suggest joining a running club with people who have the same aspirations as you. Easy Runners and A Snail’s Pace are just some of the many running clubs that can help you with your goal. Remember, every professional was once an amateur.
