1절: O say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light/ What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming/ Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight/ O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?/ And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air/ Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;/ O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave/ O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

미국 국가의 가사(The Star-Spangled Banner)를 작사한 프랜시스 스콧 키(Francis Scott Key)는 메릴랜드 프레드릭 카운티에서 1780년 8월1일 태어나 1843년 1월11일 볼티모어에서 타계했다. 그는 미국의 독립을 위해 싸운 혁명군의 장교였던 존 로스 키의 아들로서, 세인트 존스 대학에서 수학한 후 그의 숙부였던 필립 바턴 키의 사무실에 근무하면서 법을 공부하고 메릴랜드 프레드릭 시에서 변호사 생활을 하다가, 워싱턴 DC의 검사로 활약했다.
1814년 영국군이 워싱턴을 침공하자, 로스와 코크번 장군은 메릴랜드 어퍼 말보로의 윌리엄 빈즈 박사의 농장에 부대 본부를 설치했다.
키는 토마스 코크번 휘하의 ‘서프라이즈’ 함대에 편입되어 있는 동안 볼티모어를 공격하는 영국 해군과 미국 혁명군이 포트 맥헨리(Fort McHenry)에서 밤새 교전하는 것을 관찰하는 기회를 갖게 되었다.
키는 먼동이 트기 시작한 이른 새벽에 미국 수비대 포트 맥헨리 요새에 성조기가 나부끼는 것을 보고 영국군에 맞서 싸우던 미국 혁명군이 건재하다는 사실에 큰 감명을 받고 이 감동의 시를 썼다.
