As we face an array of health challenges in our rapidly evolving world, the need for fresh perspectives and innovative solutions has never been more urgent. Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) calls for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, and it‘s clear that young people must play a leading role in this mission. From mental health issues to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, our voices are not just important-they are essential in shaping a healthier future for everyone.
During my tenure as a youth delegate at the United Nations, I witnessed the passion and determination of young leaders advocating for health equity and access to healthcare. These discussions revealed that youth are not only stakeholders in health issues but also key contributors to solutions. From mental health advocacy to reproductive health, young voices are stepping up to challenge the status quo and demand a comprehensive approach to well-being.
One of my most impactful contributions to health advocacy has been through my involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association, where I founded Roh‘s Candlelights. This initiative has successfully raised several thousands of dollars for vital research on Alzheimer’s disease, directly contributing to advancements in understanding and treating this condition. Additionally, I established PT² (Prevent Today, Prosper Tomorrow), an initiative that allowed me to share my passion for preventive healthcare on an international platform at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Through PT², I connected with the Federation of African Medical Students‘ Associations (FAMSA), collaborating with medical professionals across Africa to amplify health awareness among youth. Together, we have created over 5,000 educational posters, designed informative booklets, and produced audio resources that have reached thousands of young individuals, equipping them with the knowledge to make informed health choices.
This experience demonstrated that big global goals come alive through small, relatable actions. When young people embrace these initiatives with joy, the SDGs stop being distant 2030 targets and become today’s reality. Our efforts in health advocacy show that every small step can contribute to achieving larger goals, inspiring others to engage in meaningful action.
At the UN, discussions on healthcare access highlighted the disparities faced by marginalized communities. Youth delegates, including myself, passionately advocated for dismantling barriers to healthcare, calling for universal health coverage that addresses the needs of all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Our voices resonated with policymakers, leading to commitments for more inclusive health policies that can empower underserved populations. This advocacy is crucial, as health disparities can perpetuate cycles of poverty and limit opportunities for young people to thrive.
The intersection of health and climate change emerged as a significant topic during our discussions. Young leaders increasingly recognize that a healthy planet is essential for healthy people. We advocated for sustainable practices that not only protect our environment but also enhance public health. By addressing issues such as air quality, water access, and food security, we can create conditions that foster well-being for future generations. (Part 4 of 20)
