▶ Incident Occurred While Taxiing for Takeoff at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport
▶ Over 280 Passengers Onboard
A major accident occurred on the runway of the busiest airport in the U.S., Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, on the 10th, as two Delta Air Lines domestic flights, fully loaded with passengers, collided while preparing for takeoff. The wings and tail of the aircraft were damaged. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but with over 280 passengers onboard both planes, the situation could have been much worse.
According to Delta Air Lines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the accident took place at approximately 10:10 a.m. on the 10th. An Airbus A350 bound for Tokyo struck the tail of a Delta Connection CRJ-900 jet, which was on an adjacent runway and preparing to depart for Lafayette, Louisiana. The CRJ-900’s tail was heavily damaged, and the wing of the A350 was also impacted.
The FAA reported that 221 passengers were onboard the Tokyo-bound A350, while 56 passengers were on the CRJ-900 headed for Lafayette. Fortunately, all passengers were unharmed.
The Atlanta Airport Authority released a statement saying, "Passengers on one of the planes were transported to the terminal by airport buses, while the other aircraft moved under its own power to the gate to disembark the passengers."
