Around May of 2021, Biohaven Pharmaceuticals commenced with the commercial launch of a new migraine medication called Nurtec ODT.

The FDA approved this new medicine to act both as an acute treatment and a preventative measure for migraines. While it does not work for everyone, it is important as it is the first medication to both treats and prevent migraines.

Migraines or acute migraines are a set of symptoms, primarily headaches, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. This can also act as an indication of an increased risk of stroke. Acute migraines can be exhausting and debilitating to those to experience them.

Acute migraines, the CDC states is a “...very common condition, with 15.3% of Americans aged 18 years or older reporting a migraine or severe headache in the previous 3 months.” In addition to this, many of these cases are treated in the ER, as 3% of all ER visits pertain to acute migraines.

So, Nurtec ODT, which can prevent acute migraines can assist in both the treatment and resource allocation for migraine patients.

There seem to be both ups and downsides to this new medication. The benefits are that this medication, as said before, prevents and treats acute migraines.

The fact that Nurtec ODT can prevent migraines is important as it can pave the way for more advanced medications that can prevent migraines to a greater degree. For now, the preventative effect of Nurtec ODT can assist both patients with migraines and also free up both ER and hospital space.

On the other hand, this medication, like all others, has side effects such as nausea, allergic reactions, and indigestion.

Also, the effectiveness of Nurtec ODT is not the same for everyone. It was reported that 41% of users experienced negative effects, while 41% experienced benefits.

It seems statistically, the medication is not fully optimized. The cost is also an issue as for those without health insurance in the US, the cost is $941 for 8 tablets.

It is undisputed that the Nurtec ODT medication for acute migraine is a stepping stone in creating better migraine medication. Still, it is not the ideal solution and it has a multitude of downsides to balance its benefits.

Because of this, the decision of taking this medication for those with acute migraines will depend on the healthcare provider or the patient.
