“Tonight, it is my honor and privilege to announce that I will nominate Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court.” Donald Trump announced on July 9th before the senate. Trump expected a speedy trial by senate to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh because of his impeccable record as a federal judge. However, this wasn’t the case at all.

Brett Kavanaugh was accused last month of sexually assaulting Christina Blasey Ford, a professor at Palo Alto University, at a high school party 36 years ago. “I thought it was my civic duty to relay the information I had about Mr. Kavanaugh’s conduct, so that those considering his nomination would know about this assault” said Christina Blasey Ford during her trial testifying against Kavanaugh. This serious allegation has stirred lots of controversy and only ended with both sides being hurt from it. But finally, the last senator Susan Collins voted for the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh, allowing him to be the new supreme court justice at a 51-49 vote.

Now that Kavanaugh is our newest addition to the supreme court system, how will he affect future decisions in the United States. During the trial, Brett Kavanaugh said some remarks that implied that he was a partisan republican. “This whole 2-week effort has been a calculated and orchestrated political hit, fueled with a parent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election fear that has been unfairly stoked about my judicial record, revenge on behalf of the Clintons, and millions of dollars in money from outside left wing opposition groups.” During his testimony, it is clear that he was biased for the Republicans, conspiring that the Democrats have schemed to get rid of him. When someone who has a political agenda, like Kavanaugh, enter the Supreme Justice System, there might be important changes that might change the future of America.
The Supreme Court has the power of judicial review: to decide whether a law is constitutional or unconstitutional. The coming years will bring cases on the scope of abortion rights, the tension between gay rights and religious liberty, and the contours of the Second Amendment. Having a Supreme Court Justice that is biased to the right can be detrimental to the future of the United States. These are all issues destined to expose the ideological divides on the court as these issues are complex. When there is a risk of partisanship in a justice, this might lead to corruption in the government.
