Dog desires or human desires? A new iconic trend has been introduced to animals based on human discoveries. Now, plastic surgery used for cosmetic purposes is performed on domestic dogs, cats, and other pets.
Recently, there have been more reports on the advanced development of plastic surgeries on dogs. Whether it is for medical purposes or based on an owner’s preference, it is amazing to see how much plastic surgery technology has developed to serve a whole new type of crowd. According to CBS news, there is a record of data that says, “U.S. dog owners spent $62 million in 2011 on plastic surgery treatments” and more than 500,000 dogs have been implanted with neuticles, a plastic implant for dogs. Practiced since 1995, the process is much more complex and common now. Despite the stereotypes of a plastic surgery, the usage of neuticles stands to prove that maybe these types of surgeries are beneficial to dogs after all, especially for dogs that suffer from wrinkles that cause infection. Although the title of the medical procedure is plastic surgery, such an operations is sometimes required for suffering dogs and cats in need.
However, every topic has two sides. Sadly, life’s dichotomy is found in this process as well, meaning some dogs and cats are put into surgery because of the owner’s preference. Whether the owner wants his or her pet’s eyes bigger or hips smaller, the owner’s actions violate the neutral relationship between the owner and the pet when it comes to animal rights. As dominant figures, owners can easily take advantage of their pets, which cannot communicate, to an extreme level. Also, because the results yielded more attractive dogs, such a procedure has gained popularity. With the amount of animal cruelty that already exists in the world, it is reasonable to try to limit the level of plastic surgery to only suffering animals in need of medical attention. Going beyond such measures to the extent of placing pets under stress and knives for the sole purpose of looks should not be tolerated.?
