Technology has been a really important part of our lives. We use it for our daily work and in our studies, among many other functions. Some people say that technology is good for students, while others disagree. In my opinion, technology is very beneficial for students to learn and grow both inside and outside of the classroom.
Some people think that technology can reduce children’s creativity because they think that students only search what they want to online without thinking for themselves, but I disagree with this opinion. Frank McCourt, a famous Irish-American teacher and writer claims that, “technological tools help enhance student creativity.” Speaking from personal experience, for a cereal box project, I was able to come up with a very original idea after gaining inspiration online, which I would not have been able to come up with if I had not used the Internet to my advantage. I think that technology did not stop my creativity, but only helped me get more ideas.
Additionally, the Internet can help us save time, an especially important function. Steve Jobs has said that, “If today were the last day of your life, wouldn’t you want time to go slower and do more things in a short amount of time?” ShortKeys is a great example of a technological resource that saves time. As a Windows text replacement utility, it is designed to help you type faster and more accurately. With this program, individuals are able to create abbreviations for words, phrases, and paragraphs that are used frequently, and the software then types them out automatically. Such a program can be estimated to save up to 15 minutes a day! Also, with electric books like the Kindle, we do not need to go to the store and buy books because now we can buy them directly online onto the Kindle. In my opinion, this saves us a lot of time, money, and space that physical books take up.
With the growth of technology, there have been more and more ways to contact others, such as Facebook, email, and texting, to name a few. Bill Gates has stated, “I think it’s fair to say that personal computers have become the most empowering tool we’ve ever created. They’re tools of communication, they’re tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user.” Yes, before, people didn’t even think of phones. However, now if we have some questions as we study, we can simply email our teachers for the answer. Additionally, it has never been easier to contact your friends, and news can spread much more quickly.
Technology has many positive ways to help students learn and enhance their skills. Moreover, it opens up students’ imagination, helps them to save time, and allows them to build awareness of the world. With its countless functions, technology definitely has many benefits.
