시카고 켄트 로스쿨 해롤드 크렌트 학장
지난달 말 시카고 켄트 로스쿨은 내년 3월 로스쿨 출범을 앞두고 있는 건국대학교 법과대학과 두 대학간 로스쿨 복수학위제(Dual Degree System)를 설치하기로 했다.
시카고 켄트 로스쿨의 해롤드 크렌트(Harold Krent) 학장은 “이에 따라 건국대 로스쿨의 3년 과정 중 1년(24학점)을 미국 켄트대 로스쿨에서 이수할 경우, 건국대 로스쿨과 켄트대 로스쿨에서 동시에 석사학위를 받을 수 있게 된다”고 전했다.
한국에 처음 도입되는 로스쿨 실시 대학이 미국 로스쿨과 복수학위제를 설치해 한국과 미국에서 동시에 변호사 시험에 응시할 기회를 갖게 하는 것은 건국대가 처음이다.
크렌트 학장은 “한국 학생들이 시카고 켄트에서의 교육 과정을 통해 파이낸셜 서비스, 지적 재산권 또는 국제 통상에 관한 법률 공부를 할 수 있는 기회를 얻게 되는 것이 이번 프로그램에서 강조되는 부분”이라며 “또한 미국의 문화를 깊이 체험하고 국제 거래를 다루는 접근법을 배울 수 있는 것도 큰 수확이 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
한국이 새롭게 로스쿨 제도를 도입하는 것과 관련해서도 그는 “미국의 로스쿨 방식이 성공할 수 있었던 이유는 일명 ‘소크라테스식 방식’이라고도 할 수 있는 교수와 학생 간의 상호 교류에 중점을 둔 교육 방식을 통해 학생들이 각종 법적인 의사 결정을 직접 내릴 수 있는 능력을 키워주고 있기 때문이다.
또한 학부 때의 전공을 로스쿨에서 활용해 더욱 깊이 있는 지식을 쌓고 이와 연계해 법에 대한 공부도 심화시킬 수 있는 면도 로스쿨 제도의 강점”이라고 조언했다. <이경현 기자>
C-K law to offer a dual degree program with Konkuk U

Konkuk University in Seoul will start accepting graduate students into their newly approved three-year law graduate program in collaboration with Chicago-Kent College of Law, IIT in Chicago this fall.
“Our idea is that a number of Konkuk students can spend the second or third year of their studies at Chicago-Kent and receive credit for that year from Konkuk. We award LL.M. degrees in International and Comparative Law for students who complete twenty-four credits of study” said Dean Harold J. Krent, Chicago-Kent Law.
Consequently, the students will have received both a law degree from Konkuk and an LL.M. degree from Chicago-Kent at the end of the three-year period.
An innovative break with the traditional joint degree program is allowing the year at Chicago-Kent to count for the Konkuk and Chicago-Kent degrees at the same time.
Dean Krent said students will have the opportunity to focus their study at Chicago-Kent on areas most closely aligned with their interests, whether financial services, intellectual property, or international trade.
He gave those who can afford to spend a year away from Seoul advices on how to get a deeper appreciation of the different cultural perspectives and approach that underlie international transactions. “Students will be better prepared to assist Korean businesses and law firms that work with western law firms on international licensing, deals, and investments” said Dean Krent.
In the rapidly changing global law and business environment, curriculums of Chicago-Kent Law have changed significantly over the past couple of years. Chicago-Kent Law is offering more courses in areas such as international commercial arbitration, international capital markets and international intellectual property.
Moreover, Kent law school has been setting up internships for its JD students abroad to expose them to the different approaches to international deals.
When it comes to the Korean law school system introduced this year, he pointed out that law schools in the United States have stressed a more interactive and engaged teaching environment than schools in other countries.
“Our so-termed ‘Socratic Method’ is based on close questioning of students with respect to particular court decisions and hypotheticals that are spun out of those decisions as well as out of constitutional and legislative language.”
In addition, he believe that switching the study of law to a graduate degree has ensured in the U.S. that law students have a broader base of knowledge than they otherwise would have and are more committed to the study of law than if they were undergraduates.
