Its the year before kindergarten. Is your child on track for learning how to read? Find out quickly and easily with a free screening tool for four-year-olds called Get Ready to Read!

Available for free from Reading Rockets (www.readingrockets.org/getready), the Web-based screening tool has 20 questions that a child answers by pointing to one of four pictures on the screen. When finished, a score appears that shows if the childs pre-reading skills are weak, strong, or somewhere in between.

It takes just 10-15 minutes to screen the four-year-olds you care abouta child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or student. Only you will see the score; the results are completely confidential. There are also links to fun activity cards you can print out, and loads of information on how to build the early literacy skills that are so important for kindergarten readiness.

Its recommended that you use the screening tool twiceonce in the fall (a year before the child enters kindergarten) and then again before kindergarten starts.

The screening tool was developed by Dr. Russ Whitehurst, now Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education, for the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), and was generously donated to Reading Rockets by Pearson Early Learning. Reading Rockets, a national service of public television station WETA in Washington, D.C., produces television programs, Web sites, and much more on how young kids learn to read, why so many struggle, and how caring adults can help. The project is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.
