글의 평론의 초점
(Focus for Literary Analysis)
글의 평론(Focus for Literary Analysis)이란 지금껏 쓴 것 같이 읽은 책에 대하여 쓰는 것이지만 독후감 쓰는 것과 아주 다르다.
다음은 이 평론의 ideas가 어디에서 오며, 또 어떻게 쓰는지에 대해 쓰겠다. 이 Ideas는 주로 5개의 분야에서 온다.
1. 주제(Theme)-가장 많이 쓰여진다.
2. 등장의 인물/줄거리(Characterization and Plots).
3. 배경(Setting)-배경 자체보다는 그 배경을 이해 못하면 그 글을 읽기도 힘든 작품들.
4. 스타일(Style)-상징, figures of speech가 크게 작용한 작품.
5. 작가(Author)-작가의 생애와 그 작품이 쓰여진 시대가 크게 작용하는 작품.
1. 주제
*읽은 글이 다음과 같은 주제를 다루었나?
A. 용기(Courage)가 주제를 다룬 명작이 하나, 둘이 아니다. 그 중에서 대표적인 것 몇 개만 간추려 보면:
1. Plato on Fear, (From the Gorgias)
2. Dolley Madison Saves the National Pride, by Dorothea Payne Madison)
3. Liberty or Death, by Patrick Henry
4. Self-Reliance, by Ralph Waldo Emerson
(만일 학생 중에 아직 안 읽은 책이 있으면 반드시 읽기 바란다.)
5. Light a Single Candle, Beverly Butler
B. 인내(Perseverance)-많은 글 중에 대표적인 것 몇 개만 간추려 보면:
1. The Steadfast Tin Soldier, by Hans Christian Anderson
2. Perseverance, by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
3. The Gettysburg Address, by Abraham Lincoln
4. We Shall Fight in the Fields and in the Streets, by Winston Churchill
5. I Have a Dream, by Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.
(위의 글은 역사 시험과도 큰 관련이 있는 글이다. 만일 학생 중에 아직 안 읽은 책이 있으면 반드시 읽기 바란다.)
C. 책임감(Responsibility)-많은 글 중에 대표적인 것 몇 개만 간추려 보면:
1. Plato on Responsibility, (from the Crito)
2. Letter from Birmingham City Jail, by Martin Luther King, Jr.
3. Men Without Chests, by C.S. Lewis(There are many books that C.S. Lewis wrote. All his books should be read.
4. The Conscience of the Nation Must be Roused. by Frederick Douglas
5. Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson(This story can be used for the Mystery Tale, too.)
D. Adventure(모험)
1. Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain(Samuel L. Clemens
2. Little Women, by Louisa M. Alcott
3. The Saturdays Gone-Away Lake, Elizabeth Enright
4. Tree of Freedom, by Rebbecca Caudill
5. Johnny Tremain, by Esther Forbes
E. 사랑(Love)
여기는 너무 책이 많아서 5개를 고르기가 참으로 어렵다. 다만 뛰어난 특징을 선택의 기준으로 삼는다면:
1. Henry’s Speech at Agincourt, by William Shakespeare
2. Betsy-Tacy, by Maud Hart Lovelace
이 책은 여러 권으로 되어 있고 읽기도 쉽다.
3. My Side of Mountain, by Jean George
4. Mountain Born, Elizabeth Yates
5. Meet the Austins, by Madeline L’engle
이런 주제 이외에도 야망(ambition), 질투(jealousy), 행복(happiness) 등 허다하다. 어떤 글은 이 category가 서로 겹칠 수도 있다.
*작가가 외로움(Loneliness), 편견, 욕심(greed), 인종차별(racism) 등과 같은 주제를 다루었나?

(이 이외에도 많은 글이 있다. 지면상 많은 글을 못 실음.)
* 작가가 특별히 역사적으로 어떤 시대나 어떤 장소를 다루었나?
여러 권으로 되어 있으며 미국의 발달과정에서 여러 나라의 의 공헌에 대하여 쓴 글이다.

(이 이외에도 많은 글이 있다. 지면상 많은 글을 못 실음.)
●결 론
위의 나열한 책은 학생들이 이미 다 읽었을 것이다. 사실은 많은 책 중에서 읽었다고 생각하는 글만 여기에 썼다.
글의 평론 (Focus for Literary Analysis)을 쓰려면 물론 좋은 글을 읽어야 하겠지만, 위에서 나열한 것 같이 주제별로 그 글이 무엇에 대한 것이라는 것에 focus를 맞추어야 한다.
다음 주에는 2. 등장의 인물/줄거리(Characterization and Plots)에 어떻게 focus를 맞추어야 하느냐에 대해 쓰겠다.
